| Project Ole' Status Report Fall 2003 The landscape plan for the front of RHS was designed by students with the help of professional landscapers. We researched a variety of plants and chose specimens that are hardy and offer diverse examples for future classes to learn about. The plants are arranged in groupings of three ("islands") as to make mowing the remaining lawn as easy as possilbe. This summer we experienced delays due to digging through construction debris, lack of plumbing, and waiting for sidewalks to be finished. We now have completed sidewalks, outside faucets with a simple plan to implement watering, and the grounds crew brought in a back hoe to pre-dig the rest of the holes and remove some debris. We currently have raised funds to plant 12 islands (3 trees each) in front of school as well as three individual specimen trees. We have purchased two of the specimen trees (Ginko) and are holding them in our nursery until spring when they will be planted. Three islands have been planted with trees and perennials, mulched, and finally edged with brick pavers. A fourth island has been planted with trees and mulched and will be edged this spring. We have added perennials to the flower box by the stairs and more perennials to our center garden. This fall we held a "Just Desserts" for the Ole' workers and recognized each participant with a certificate of the hours of community service they gave. This spring it is our intention to finish buying and planting the trees for the other islands. We will continue mulching and finishing borders over the summer with the continued help of student and staff volunteers. At this time we still have three islands that have not been funded so we hope to raise an additional $1500 to finish the front of the building. |
