The temperature was near 90 so only 6 brave students came to work. We worked on weeding and mulching our perennial bed that is around the flagpole. After 90 minutes in the sun we then went to pruning trees. We discovered a duck nesting under a tree with a lot of sucker growth so we did not prune that tree!

This was not a normal Wednesday work day but I asked students to come as we received a $1000.00 check from the Michigan branch of the National Womens Farm and Garden Association. This was due to the efforts of the Rochester chapter of NWFGA. The Rochester chapter was the first group to donate to our project. They gave us $100.00 and then applied for a grant from the Michigan branch.

See that pile of woodchips in the turn around? Guess what we will be doing next week?
The perennials that survived the winter are just getting ready to bloom. We do have gaps in this first planting. Our intern assistant principal; Chuck May, was given a $200 gift card to Home Depot which he has donated to us so that we may finish this first island!
The project for this day was to prevent weeds from coming up in our perennial bed around the flag pole. This area had already been weeded twice this spring and yet with a week's worth of steady rain... well, the weeds were winning.

The wheelbarrow was purchased with funds raised by the Botany class. In the background you can see the White Cone Flowers are blooming and the yellow flowers are Coreopsis. There is also Sedum (Dragon's Blood) and Russian Sage at this time. In our three hours of work we mulched half of the circle. As the summer days heated up, our work force grew smaller. Therefore we spent most of the summer on this one area. Here is how it looked for the opening of school the last week of August.
