FirstSummer of Project Ole'
Thirty students have signed up to come in to help on Wednesday mornings from 9:00 until 12:00.  They can come in for any one or all of the 8 sessions we have planned. Each participant will receive a certificate of recognition for the number of hours of volunteer community work they gave.
The work for each session is determined by factors such as materials we have to be planted, weather conditions, as well as limitiations within our building.  For example we can't develop several areas until additional sidewalks are  in.  We still do not have faucets on the outside of the building so any watering must be done from a utility sink inside!  This really restricts how much new planting we can do but we hope to have one area completed for the fall. We are also pruning sucker growth and broken branches off the existing trees as well as dividing perennials and mulching them until we are ready to plant them.
   JUNE 18, 2003
We planted 7 lilac bushes donated by retiring Enlish teacher; Bea Smits.
Soil was very compacted and had lots of construction debris.  We added compost, top soil, and peat to the soil and then placed woodchips around the shrubs. As the sod was dug up we had other students filling in gaps in another area.
We had 18 students working when a army recruiter came up to the building and was amazed to know that the students were choosing to spend some of
their vacation time volunteering at school! Hmm, he didn't offer to help...
